1940 Wisden Hardback – Special

£975.00 £780.00

This is a SUPER condition 1940 Wisden Hardback edition. The 77th edition.

This edition comes from the Diana Rait Kerr collection. Rowan Scrope Rait Kerr was the MCC Secretary from 1936 to 1952. His daughter Diana joined him at Lord’s after WW2 to help catalogue and arrange the MCC library. She eventually became Curator of the MCC museum. During her work at Lord’s she also wrote extensively for cricket publications and co-wrote books with Ian Peebles. She was also one of the first women to be offered MCC membership.
She inherited her fathers’ Wisden collection and also built her own.

This edition has such poignancy – the last full season of English domestic cricket was 1939 and it is naturally covered extensively in this edition, and some of the comments and wordings around the matches played on or near September 1st 1939 are thought-provoking to say the least!

The front and rear boards are in lovely condition – strong and with only minor bumping to the outside edge of the rear board. The spine is very strong. The gilt to both the front and the spine is excellent.

The inside front and inside hinges are strong and the pages within super.

The page block is also very very good.

Contents Include:
Cricket in War-Time.
MCC Matches.
Wicket-Keepers 1939.
Notes On the 1939 Season.
West Indies in England.
County Champions: Yorkshire.
