1934 Wisden Hardback – Good+
£500.00 £400.00
Thank you for looking at this Good+ condition 1934 Wisden Hardback. This edition is the seventy-first almanack.
When building a Wisden collection some particular years are simply a ‘must have’ and 1934 is one of them. This edition contains the full record, analysis and extensive comment on the MCC tour of Australia in 1932-1933, or the ‘Bodyline’ tour as it has become known.
Such was the ferocity of the English bowling that it led to condemnation in both countries and questions in Parliament. The England quickies led by Larwood were instructed by the Captain, Douglas Jardine to bowl at the body of the Aussie batsman, thus restricting their infamous run-getting capability and the consternation from the cricket authorities, media and spectators created a tidal wave of venom against the tourists.
This almanack covers the tour and its repercussions. Larwood, acting under orders, was never to play for England again after refusing to apologise. Jardine was never asked to apologise and yet it was he who instigated the strategy.
The original front and rear boards are in Very Good+ condition, they are bright and clean, with some ageing and scuffing to the outside edges. The spine is lovely, both firm, strong and very very clean, with some rubbing to the top and the foot. The gilt on both the front and the spine is splendid.
The inside hinges are in very very good condition – the front hinge has been repaired and this can be seen on the photograph, the rear hinge has been strengthened. The paste down pages to the front and to the rear are in lovely condition. The rest of the internal pages are in very good+ condition.
The page block is dusty and aged.
