1882 Wisden Paperback – UNIQUE

This is a Lovely condition 1882 Wisden Paperback edition. The Nineteenth edition.

It is becoming increasingly difficult finding the early Wisdens.

This edition is from the Diana Rait Kerr collection. Rowan Scrope Rait Kerr was the MCC Secretary from 1936 to 1952. His daughter Diana joined him at Lord’s after WW2 to help catalogue and arrange the MCC library. She eventually became Curator of the MCC museum. During her work at Lord’s she also wrote extensively for cricket publications and co-wrote books with Ian Peebles. She was also one of the first women to be offered MCC membership.
She inherited her fathers’ Wisden collection and also built her own and when the set was offered to me I bought all 240+ editions.

The wrappers on this Wisden are present and in lovely condition. They are very very clean and show very very little ageing. As can be seen on the photograph there is some  tape at the top left of the front wrapper and the top right of the rear wrapper. There is negligible impact on the wrappers.

The spine is worn a little and the paper is exposed, but it is strong and secure and this edition will not need restoration if treated with the respect it merits.

Internally the hinges are splendid and the pages within are delightful, showing only absolute minimum ageing, indeed it is fair to say that there is no internal ageing.

The page block is – for a 142 year old edition – rather lovely.
